Nearly 25% of all people in the world will suffer from some sort of fungal infection in their lifetime. One in ten people will suffer from some form of toenail fungus or fingernail fungus. Nail fungus, which is mold and yeast, lives between the nail in the nail bed and feeds from karetin. Toenail fungus and fingernail fungus accounts for almost one half of all nail disorders. Nail fungus is an unsightly condition and at times can be painful. The nail turns colors including yellow, brown and green. The nail can have a repulsive odor as well. Eventually, the edges of the nails will become brittle and crumble. Advanced cases will distort the nails and are almost certainly painful by the time the condition is that advanced.
Nail fungus can be treated with a variety of prescription medications. Prescription drugs include Lamisil, Sporanox, and Fulvicin. 25% to 75% of infections can be cured with a prescription medication. The probability of success seems to vary greatly from person to person. Diflucan is sometimes prescribed as well but it hasn’t been studied as well as the other prescription antifungal drugs.
Nail health is important and nutrition plays a big part in this. Proper nutrition is not a nail fungus cure, however, you can prevent nail fungus from ever taking root. Ensuring you are getting enough iron in your diet is an important part of nail health as well as general all around health or your circulatory system. Other than nail fungus, you might have brittle nails or vertical ridges and both can be signs you are not getting enough iron. Iron-rich foods which may help fight nail fungus include grains, prunes, and leafy greens. Wheat germ is also high in iron. Most seeds are high in iron as well. A diet high in iron isn’t a nail fungus treatment, but you certainly can fight off exposure so the fungus never takes root.
A protein deficiency can account for nail problems including nail fungus. If you don’t get enough protein and your nails start cracking or bleeding, you open up the possibility of nail fungus setting in. Meats, cheeses, and other animal products are excellent sources of protein. Vegetables can be excellent sources of protein but you need to be educated on which vegetables are high in protein. Beans and other legumes are good protein choices. Soy products contain proteins as well. Proper protein intake isn’t the cure for nail fungus, but it contributes significantly to nail health and keeps infection such as toenail fungus from infesting your nail bed.
Omega 3 fatty acids are not only good for your cardiovascular system, but they are excellent for strong healthy nails. Healthy nails fight of nail fungus much more readily than dry or brittle nails. Increasing your Omega 3 intake can easily be done with eating fish. Salmon and sea bass are both high in omega 3’s. Shell fish such as shrimp and scallops are high in omega 3’s. Omega 3 oils are essential for all parts of your body and your nails are no exception. Healthy nails can usually stave off toenail fungus as well as fingernail fungus.

As it relates to nail fungus, bacteria and fungus feeds on excess sugar. Stick to complex carbohydrates and carbohydrates from fruits for optimal nutrition. Your nails will benefit and your chances of getting a nail fungus will be greatly reduced.
While nail fungus normally takes root when you allow too much moisture to linger on your hands and feet, it is equally as harmful to allow your hands and feet to become too dry. Similar to nasal passages, dry skin can crack and allow harmful bacteria, viruses, and fungus to be introduced. Cracked skin and nails are excellent conduits for toenail fungus to enter in to your nail beds. If you live in a climate that is extremely dry, use a proper lotion on your hands and feet to keep the skin healthy and avoid and infiltration of nail fungus.
Keeping a healthy body works to fight off disease, bacteria, infections, viruses, and various other problems. A healthy body will make you much less susceptible to nail fungus infections.
