Nail fungus infects a great number of people and there are a lot of myths circulated about nail fungus. There are some facts that seem hard to believe as well. Take the toenail fungus quiz to see if you know as much about toenail fungus as you think.
1. You can put toenail fungus in to a remission of sorts but you can never get rid of it.
False. Toenail fungus can be killed and you can keep it away forever. It is somewhat like a bacterial infection you would treat with an antibiotic in a way though. If you don’t get every last bit of the fungus, you’re likely to have it come back. It can be killed however.
2. Acrylic nails are a major contributing factor to nail fungus.
This one is tricky. True and False. Acrylic nails themselves do not cause or add to the problem of toenail fungus. However, the process of applying acrylic nails can lead to the fungus. Fungus enters in to your nail bed through compromises in your nail. So, cuts and abrasions around the nail can allow toenail fungus to enter in to your nail bed and begin to grow.
3. Some people are more apt to get toenail fungus than others.
True. Your body chemical makeup can be more friendly to nail fungus from one person to the next. The PH levels of the host can make for a friendly environment for toenail fungus. Some seem to be susceptible and other are not.
4. It is dangerous to have nail fungus when pregnant.
False. Nail fungus is not circulated in your blood so a fetus is not effected. Remember, however, that prescription drugs are generally circulated throughout your blood stream. Your doctor can advise of any risks associated with prescription nail fungus remedies.
5. Nail fungus will not go away on its own. I’ll have to treat it or live with it forever.
False. Granted, most people will have to treat nail fungus to get it to go away, but if you change the environment where the fungus lives, you can get rid of the fungus in some cases.
6. Topical treatments for nail fungus are effective.
False. Topical treatments are generally NOT effective to treatment of nail fungus. Your nail does a very effective job protecting the nail bed.
7. If one of your parents had nail fungus, the odd of you contracting it are increased.
True. Nail fungus is hereditary. The conditions that were ideal for nail fungus to grow are many times passed down to children. Body chemistry and the makeup the nail and nail bed are similar and make conditions ripe.
